Kumiko from Cash Quests craves attention
Kumiko over at www.cashquests.com has done something crazy. Actually, when you think about it, she’s done something ingenious. She’s turned off comments on her blog and evaluated the results. After reading her thoughts on seven days with comments, I get the impression that Kumiko doesn’t really believe that she has done something directly beneficial to her blog.
Saving time and grabbing attention
By not having comments turned on Kumiko saves time on things like replying to her readers and deleting comment spam, the first of which is essential for building up relationships with your readers, the second of which takes no time at all if you use Akismet.
Not having comments damages a blog’s enjoyability factor because there is no community. The author remains hidden and you have to make a considerable effort to make contact – nobody wants that. By doing what she’s done, however, Kumiko has generated publicity. She’s performed a brave publicity stunt and is no doubt already smiling at the results.
John Chow has already given Kumiko a nod, and people must be visiting her site and wondering if her stunt is paying off. I expect Kumiko will turn around and turn comments back on soon. If she doesn’t then the novelty of what she is doing will wear off and people will likely get bored. Her goal, like mine, is to make money online, and by doing something that grabbed people’s attention, she will likely receive a little burst. Full marks for that one.
I’m still conceiving my first publicity stunt.
