Drum ‘n’ bass
One of the most exciting musical genres from the UK now has an established following in Thailand. The music is based around break-beats – think hip hop, but faster, and more energetic. As a product of hardcore music, drum ‘n’ bass is fast-paced and energetic. It’s also a lot of fun. Get ready to sweat like you’ve never sweat before in a steaming room full of clubbers dancing to as if there was no tomorrow. Drum ‘n’ bass has a lot of scope for clubbing and keeping relatively fit at the same time, if only because of the carefree, uninhibited way it compels people to dance. Hot-spots in Bangkok right now include the Vertigo events at Astra, RCA. Be sure to check out The Specialist, one of Bangkok’s hottest DJ imports, fresh from the UK.

House and trance
Slightly more conventional, but just as athletic, house and trance are musical genres crafted around the generic four-four beat. Dance moves are more thoughtful, and may require some practice. Regular attendees to house and trance nights have been known to dance for periods of up to 12 hours without rest. Imagine step-aerobics, but with a few more smiles and a bit more jumping. Don’t be afraid to jump around like a maniac if you hear some crowd pleasing sounds. Happening places in Bangkok include Glow Bar and Bed Supperclub in Sukhumvit.

Electro
Less conventional than house and trance, electro music is deep, down and dirty. The bass-lines are low, and the music is pounding. Dance-floors have been known to erupt into spontaneous chaos to the likes of New Order’s Blue Monday and Josh Wink’s Higher State of Consciousness, as was the case when Ladytron’s Reuben Wu graced the decks at Time:Out, RCA, in May. For those that like to dance the night away without a hint of pretension, scope out your local electro scene and sweat the calories out of your body.

Let’s take Thailand as an example. I’ve spent a lot of time in Thailand and I’ve seen the large number of websites and blogs that people make about the place. However, most of these sites aren’t fully utilized for making money online. They’re hobby sites, so to speak, and people spend hours of their time writing content for them without getting any money in return.

What’s to stop you visiting one of Thailand’s major cities, spending a bit of time getting to know the place and then writing useful content to put on a site? Obviously if you choose somewhere such as Bangkok you’re going to come up against stiff competition, but if you go to Chiang Mai, Samui, Pattaya or somewhere equally on the tourist radar but not so much the focal point, you have a better chance of success.

I did this with my Phuket website. I lived on the island and spent time compiling content about the beaches, restaurants, nightlife, hotels and so on. Sure, it takes time, but if you have gained a significant amount of blogging knowledge from running other sites, then it makes sense to put this to good use – and there is nothing better than traveling the world and doing it.

Some people blog so that they will have more opportunities to travel, but there’s nothing to stop a person combining blogging and travel and making a decent living off of it.

Even if you don’t stay in one place for too long, you can do a lot of research on the Internet, look at what your competition is doing and then do it better. A lot of travel websites are dated and tired.

If you really want to take on such a mission, you can also look at the older websites that rank well for your keywords and try and buy the sites out. Many travel websites were started on a whim, but the webmasters ran out of time, money or energy and shelved their projects.

You will likely need a little money behind you to get yourself set up in a new country, but if you’ve been making money blogging for a little while, you should be able to do this without any problems, especially if you choose to live somewhere as cheap as Thailand.

Phuket is served by an international airport. There are cheap Phuket flights to and from airports all over the world. The great thing about living in Thailand is that internal flights are inexpensive. This is especially true of Phuket flights at the time of writing. The reason? Thailand’s tourism industry is ailing after the airport closure in Bangkok last year. Airlines are now practically giving away cheap flights to Phuket.

If you’re traveling from Bangkok, the best way to get cheap flights to Phuket is to visit the website of Air Asia (www.airasia.com). The prices are usually the cheapest around, although don’t expect any kind of frills when you travel.

I’m also a fan of Thai Airways, which is Thailand’s luxury liner. Thai Airways offers Phuket flights to and from destinations all over Thailand and the rest of the world. For internal flights the prices are expensive, but for traveling between countries, Thai Airways is competitively priced.

If you’re ever in Phuket and you need to fly to Penang – something that’s more than likely if you plan to work in Phuket and need to leave the country to get the appropriate visa – there’s a small carrier called Firefly that services the route.

There are also a number of major international airlines offering Phuket flights, including Qantas, Dragonair, Silk Air and Jetstar. The best way to compare prices is to look on the website of one of the major flight-booking agents, such as Expedia or Ebookers.

In terms of Phuket hotels, I am no expert, but I was on the island long enough to know that there are hotels and resorts for all budgets. If you’re a backpacker keen to save your money for buying baggy pants and bottles of beer, there are plenty of cheap guesthouses. If you’re a couple on a honeymoon, there are lots of upmarket resorts dotted around the island.

I’d say that it’s essential to do a bit of research into where you want to stay on the island. If you love parties then it would make sense to stay somewhere like Kata, Karon or Patong. Patong in particular has lots of bars, clubs and discos. It can get a bit wild down there, but the nightlife goes on until the early hours of the morning.

Hotels in Phuket can cost as little as $10 a night right up to several thousand dollars for a luxury villa. I’ve had the pleasure of staying in some of the swankier Phuket hotels, including Indigo Pearl in Nai Yang, which is a personal favorite. If anyone were to visit Phuket, I’d recommend Indigo Pearl, although the price of a night there doesn’t come cheap.

In terms of booking Phuket hotels, the marvels of the Internet make that part easy enough. There are several high-profile booking agents, including Agoda, Asia Rooms and Hotel Travel, offering Phuket hotels. Shopping already, even between agents, is a good idea. You’d think that visiting the website of one agent would be enough, but business is business.

On weekends, there are many things in the Phuket market that you can buy very cheap, but you have to be good at bargaining. You can get your mits on T-shirts shoes, DVDs, CDs and even pets.

While strolling along the road in Patong, you will find many vendors selling products, such as watches and suits. Vendors in the Patong often have low-quality good going for high prices, so be vigilant when you’re out on the streets.

You buy fakes and take them back home at your own risk. If you want to have a suit made for yourself, then go to Bangkok, as you will find better quality tailors.

Phuket shopping is great for every and you’ll be sure to come away with heaps of bargains.

When you have chosen your Phuket travel guide, you’re going to want to start planning your trip. Phuket has a lot to offer, ranging from pristine beaches to buzzing nightlife. What you have to remember is that not all of Phuket is the same.

A lot of Phuket travel guides will try and steer you in the direction of the busy tourist spots on the island. Places such as Patong and Kata-Karon are not our idea of an island paradise. In fact, if you ask people who live in Phuket the places they recommend, none of them will tell you to go Patong.

Despite this, Patong remains the most popular place in Phuket. Patong nightlife is famed all over Thailand, mostly for the wrong reasons. There are heaps of go-go bars, sex shows and beer bars, but other than that, Patong doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.

If you want the beach, you’re better of choosing somewhere such as Mai Khao or Nai Harn. Sure, if you want a night of cheap booze and loud music, you can get it at the bars and clubs in Patong, but there are far better places to go for nightlife in Phuket.

A lot of Phuket travel guides sing the praises of Phuket Town. This is one area that most people will actually agree on. Although Phuket Town may not have its own beach, it has history, culture, style and, if you want it, nightlife. More to the point, you can actually reach the beach in about 15 minutes by car or tuk-tuk from Phuket Town.

Staying in Phuket Town is also far more affordable than Patong. Patong nightlife is seedy and pretty boring, unless you’re easily entertained.

Phuket is as popular as ever, and it’s only going to become more so. What is changing is that more Asian tourists are starting to come to the island while some Westerners are choosing to visit neighboring provinces. Phuket is still worth visiting, especially during low season.
