Do the pro bloggers brag about their earnings too much?

One thing that annoys the hell out of me is when great bloggers brag about how fantastic they are by showing off their earnings. Desi Baba used to do it, but in a recent post he did something smart and backtracked, saying that he was silly to boast about his earning. He has also recently said that he should have used his earnings better than he did. He bought himself a whole bunch of stuff and didn’t have much to show for it after that. Good on you, Desi – modesty is a virtue.

After reading about Text Link Ads on Amanda’s site I was keen to see a few more of her posts, but was a little disappointed with one that seemed rather arrogant. For someone with a brand new blog, reading Amanda say things like, “Okay so I’ve been making butt loads of money. Hecky I already made over 2,000 dollars and it’s not even the middle of the month. Oh I am fancy right?” doesn’t make me warm to her online persona.

When I start making money with this blog, I’ll be open about how much I’m making, but I won’t brag about it because, to a reader like myself, it makes me feel small. It doesn’t inspire me to do anything. I want to read bloggers who can motivate without crossing a line.

Amanda has a great blog and a bubbly personality, but I want to read less about how great she is doing and more about why I should keep her RSS subscription in my Google Reader.

What do you think? Are bloggers ever too big for their boots?

  1. I think Amanda was trying to fill more content, rather than brag. She has a funky personality, that’s for sure, but near the end before she gave TBW to me, she was spending so much time on her other site that TBW was kind of an afterthought.

I’m trying to fill her shoes, but I’m not quite as motivated as she was. I certainly wish I had her networking skills. :P

  2. `I think you definitely get my personality incorrect. If you read more you see that I am meaning it to be funny. Coming to a site and assuming it is one way is definitely not how it is meant to be. I have a funny personality which has helped me a lot. My readers liked my personality, and followed my blog to Pajama Mommy Community where I have the same personality which has me now working with several networks because of the fact that I am down to earth. I apologise if you felt I was being arrogant but without knowing me you wouldn’t have seen it was meant as a reflection of how I talk. I write my blog how I would speak to someone in person. Sorry if you found it offensive.

  3. I love Amanda too! She is a great women to network with. I am sure she didn’t mean for it to come out like that. But i know that newbies like me, like to hear about the money they make. It motivates me to keep trudging on.

  4. Hey, sorry to ruffle any feathers. and thank you for stopping by and having your say. No worries, huh? :)
