How much money would tempt you to work from home?

I’ve had to think very hard about what I want to do with my life this month. Although I have always been a staunch opponent of working from home, I was very nearly tempted into doing just that. I’ve made a tidy sum of money over the past six weeks. Some bloggers say that you don’t start making money online until you are earning in excess of $1,000 a month. Well, now I’m at that point and could quite easily envisage keeping this rolling as long as I have the drive.

I was made one offer that could pay up to $1,000 a month working for a website. It’s not particularly difficult work, but I had to question whether I could seriously give up my job and dent my career in journalism to work online. The money is there to be made and I have proved to myself that I can make it, but because I enjoy my career, I’ve chosen to take a route that will earn me far less money.

What has really become apparent to me recently is that I don’t get as much of a kick out of working on the Internet as I do going out and doing something in the “real” world. I’m probably a fool for making this decision, but I think that the option to work online will always be there – it’s just a matter of keeping up with trends.

So what would you do? I calculated that I could earn more than six times my basic salary if I worked from home. Would you do it?

  1. [...] Angei poses the question. When can you honestly say “I have made it?” Explore posts in the same categories: Blog Connection [...]

  2. Hmm, I want to go into journalism after completing my degree but to be honest, the amount of money made, online or not, is a priority for me. Therefore if I was you, I’d stick the middle finger to my 9-5 job! (in my case uni :D )

  3. See im the opposite, I get a kick out of working online. And don’t forget – the internet is still the “real” world!

  4. Hmmm…I’ve been in that position quite a few times, had a job in IT that paid very well but packed it in ‘cos it wasn’t my passion. Went on to work for the council and quit that one too as it was leaving me miserable. Became an artist, earning A LOT LESS than I used to. I’m broke as hell, but wouldn’t go back to a desk job if there were a whole lot of cookies at the end of the rainbow.

BUT, if I could earn a significant amount of money online, and still do what I love, that would be a happy medium for me.

Good luck whatever you decide. It really is down to you. I’ve had people tell me I’m crazy for trying to eek out a living as an artist when I could go back into IT or any other area as I have two degrees. But my life is not theirs to run. Let them get their own degrees and do with it what they may.

At the end of the day, follow your own groove. I’ve learnt that not following it can make your soul shrivel up.

  5. I’d have to do it Matt, I’ve got kids!

  6. Well if there are lots of clients and business running well, I don’t see why I would not stay at home and work. Afterall I can get up when I want and choose my own hours.
